SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK (SEPT 10-SEPT 14)
- When dealing with a possibly suicidal friend/acquaintance, awareness is the key. A suicidal person may not ask for help, but that doesn’t mean that help isn’t wanted. Most people who commit suicide don’t want to die--they just want to stop hurting. Suicide prevention starts with recognizing some warning signs, taking them seriously, and acting quickly to get professional support for the individual by reporting to a trusted adult.
- Talking openly about suicidal thoughts and feelings can save a life. Speak up if you’re concerned and seek professional help immediately. You can help a friend or acquaintance get support so that they can overcome thoughts of suicide.
- The World Health Organization estimates that approximately one million people die each year from suicide. It is difficult to put yourself into a suicidal person’s mindset, but a suicidal person is in so much pain that they do not see other options.
- Here are some warning signs which could indicate suicidal thoughts or intentions:
- Reckless behavior
- Self-mutilation
- Writing or talking about death and suicide
- Extremes of behavior
- Changes in behavior
- Poor sleep patterns
- Change in appearance
- Isolating behaviors
- Sometimes it can be difficult to start a conversation with a person you are worried about. You may worry that your feelings of concern might be wrong or that they might be angry with you. Remember--anyone who talks about suicide or shows warning signs needs immediate help--the sooner the better!
- Here are some ways to start a conversation:
- “I have been feeling concerned about you lately.”
- “Recently I’ve noticed some differences in you and wondered how you are doing.”
- “I wanted to check in with you because you haven’t seemed to be yourself lately.”
- If you’re not sure what to do and have a concern, contact your school counselor in downstairs E House or your School Success Worker, directly across from the Counseling Center. You may also want to consider talking to a teacher. You may also choose to call or text 1-800-273-TALK (8255) for guidance and support. Remember, you can help save a life by reaching out!
- STUDENT WILL BE IN THE COMMONS DURING LUNCH WITH MORE INFORMATION ABOUT SUICIDE PREVENTION
